95 years young: Violet Davis has lived in Wentworthville for most of her life and is a descendant of Maria Ann Smith, famous for her green apples. The great, great granddaughter of the discoverer of the Granny Smith apple turned 95 this month. She celebrated her birthday on June 10 playing bingo with her friends.

Her great, great grandmother was Maria Ann Smith, who propagated the cultivar from a chance seedling in 1868. Mrs Davis puts her long life down to good genes. Not surprisingly, she’s biased when it comes to apple varieties. “They make the best apple pies,” she said.
